10. Unbelievable

Netflix miniseries | Unbelievable

Unbelievable, a true-crime drama, is one the best Netflix shows ever made. The story is about a series of rapes that occurred in 2008–2011 in Washington State and Colorado. It has a somewhat revolutionary feel about it. It’s a difficult series to watch at times, the kind that will stay with you long after the last scenes have passed; for a narrative about rape, that’s not surprising.

The work of its three outstanding lead actors is great but very special or unique; other television shows and films have also employed superb actors to tell these stories.  Instead, Unbelievable sets itself apart by just assuming one major assumption: that everyone watching already understands that rape is a heinous crime.

It’s assumed you’ve taken care of that. It’s assumed that you’ve seen The Handmaid’s Tale, Boys Don’t Cry, or, more recently, The Nightingale, and that you’ve seen rape presented in media in a visceral, nightmare-like manner
